Student Behavior
Data for understanding student behaviors in the classroom is limited. This information was gathered via a teacher survey that was administered in the first three years of the grant (2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19) but not in 2019-20 or 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures. Teachers completed a survey at the end of the school year for regular attendees. For each question, the survey asked if this student needed to improve on that item at the beginning of the school year. Results are reported below for students who needed to improve and teachers rated these students as “improved”, “stayed the same”, or “declined.”
Based on available data, the program’s performance relative to the objectives for student behavior was mixed. The program met the objective for homework completion but not for class participation in Year 2 (2017-18) at Mill Creek. (The stated objective is “At least 70% of regular attendees will improve on turning in their homework on time, completing homework to the teachers’ satisfaction, and class participation.”) In Year 3 (2018-19) at Mill Creek, the program met the objective for homework completed to the teachers’ satisfaction, with 70% of regular attendees meeting this benchmark, but not for homework turned in on time. The program did not meet the student behavior objectives at Meeker.
Generally, teachers did feel that programming was beneficial to their students. This improved from around 50% in Year 1 (2016-17) at Meeker to 79% in Year 3 (2018-19); Mill Creek saw teacher satisfaction starting at 91% in Year 1 (2016-17), dropping to 79% in Year 2 (2017-18), and returning to 91% in Year 3 (2018-19).
