Program Operations, Schedule, and Staffing
Over the course of the five-year grant, Sunnycrest and Wildwood both offered programming in Summer, Fall, and Spring that was open to all students that wanted to participate.
Summer programming:
- Followed each school year, with programming offered for 4-6 hours per day
- Recruited students from those who participated in school-year programming, or by teacher referral
- Was flexible and adaptable in shifting to shortened virtual summer programming in 2020
Summer 2021 programming was hybrid (both virtual and in-person) to respond to family preferences as well as operational considerations (e.g., the availability of bus transportation):
- Sunnycrest offered an hour of virtual programming after their in-person program, M-Th.
- Wildwood did not have access to district space or buses, so hosted the program at another location with charter bus service. Programming was two weeks in person and two weeks of virtual.
In addition, Wildwood adapted its Summer 2019 programming due to the school's move to a new building, with an abbreviated program in a church space as well as a kindergarten transition program at the end of summer.
For school-year programming:
- In 2017-18 and 2018-19, the program was afterschool for 2-3 hours per day.
- In 2019-20, Wildwood added before-school programming.
- The program was interrupted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed virtual programming in Summer 2020, and an online program in the 2020-21 school year, with both before and after-school programming.
- Both sites shifted to a hybrid program in 2021-22, offering two days of virtual and two days of in-person programming per week.
21st CCLC Site Coordinators worked in each school to oversee staff and programming. Other staff included a mix of paid and volunteer staff, including high school and college students, teaching and non-teaching school day staff, community members and parents, Americorps volunteers, and other paid staff.
