Recommendations for 2021-22

As the 21^st CCLC program returns to in-person programming, there are several recommendations to consider for the year ahead:

• Providing social emotional support: The Federal Way 21^st CCLC continues to emphasize social emotional learning, and has provided important support to students and families throughout the pandemic. They can continue to build on their strengths in building connection and community, particularly in light of the toll the past year has taken on many students and families and as they prepare for a return to in-person school in Fall 2021.
• Recommitting to enrollment and regular attendance goals: In early Fall 2019, the program set a goal to increase the percentage of students who regularly attend the program and developed systems to support this goal. Sunnycrest adopted an incentive program where students keep track of their attendance through attendance boards and earn rewards for regular attendance. Wildwood developed a new structure for their program, where students could attend a 30-minute program before school in addition to the two-hour afterschool program (and both sites had before- and after-school options in 2020-21). The program may revisit these strategies in combination with lessons learned from the past year where they had a high level of engagement from participants, even though the total number of participants was smaller than previous years.
• Connecting with families: The virtual format provided an opportunity for more frequent events with strong engagement from many families of regular attendees. The program might consider how to incorporate these successes in family engagement in the past year, perhaps considering a continued virtual format for connecting with families. They can also build on their creative and responsive approaches to connecting with and supporting families as they return to in-person programming in the year ahead.
