Impact for Students

Student Achievement
The program sought to measure student achievement in relation to the following two objectives:

  • 50% of regular attendees will demonstrate progress in reading.
  • 50% of regular attendees will demonstrate progress in math.

To determine student progress in reading and math, the Kent School District provided academic information from iReady assessments conducted across the district. iReady Growth Measures were used to align with district growth standards. Data definitions and guidance for interpretation were provided to evaluators by the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Kent School District.

Additionally, iReady Relative Levels were used to measure student achievement in math and reading. This was used to track general progress of regular attendees and see if students maintained their level or if they improved at all based on their relative level, even if they still may not have met district typical or stretch growth targets, per the measure above.

Student Growth in Reading
Student growth in reading was evaluated based on iReady data provided by the Kent School District. This data contains iReady results for all 21st CCLC program participants that provided data sharing consent.

Additionally, in alignment with the 21st CCLC program, improvement rates were calculated for regular attendees only.

The program’s goal was for 50% of regular attendees to demonstrate progress in reading. East Hill met this objective with 61% of regular attendees improving reading scores. Springbrook met this objective with 50% of regular attendees improving reading scores. The results of a more detailed analysis are as follows:

iReady Growth Measures:

  • During the 2023-24 academic year, 55% of regular attendees at East Hill and 54% of regular attendees at Springbrook met typical growth standards for iReady reading, as defined by the Kent School District.
  • 33% of regular attendees at East Hill and 22% of regular attendees at Springbrook met stretch growth standards for iReady Reading.

iReady Level Scales:

  • 100% of regular attendees at East Hill and 98% of regular attendees at Springbrook either maintained or increased their iReady Grade Levels.
  • 61% of regular attendees at East Hill and 50% of regular attendees at Springbrook improved their iReady Reading levels.
  • 39% of regular attendees at East Hill and 96% of regular attendees at Springbrook maintained their iReady Reading levels.

For data on regular attendees meeting typical and stretch reading growth standards and improving in iReady reading levels, see Table 4 and Table 5.

Table 4: Rates of Regular Attendees that Meet Typical and Stretch Growth Standards (Reading)

Adjusted Cohort* 18 50
# Met Typical Growth 10 27
% Met Typical Growth 55% 54%
# Met Stretch Growth 6 11
% Met Stretch Growth 33% 22%

Per the guidance of the Kent School District, students who received percentage scores over 100% in either the iReady typical or stretch growth measure are considered to have “met” growth standards.

*Note: There were some student records in the Kent School District data request that were missing either a Fall or Spring iReady score. These records were excluded from this analysis and the adjusted cohort was created for these calculations.

Per the guidance of the Kent School District, students who received percentage scores over 100% in either the iReady typical or stretch growth measure are considered to have “met” growth standards.

Student Growth in Math
Student growth in math was evaluated based on iReady data provided by the Kent School District. This data contains iReady results for all 21st CCLC program participants that provided data sharing consent.

As a result, n-values in Table 6 and Table 7 may not reflect those in previous sections. Additionally, in alignment with the 21st CCLC program, improvement rates were calculated for regular attendees only.

The program’s goal was for 50% of regular attendees to demonstrate progress in math. East Hill met this objective with 50% of regular attendees improving math scores. Springbrook met this objective with 52% of regular attendees improving math scores. The results of a more detailed analysis are as follows:

iReady Growth Measures:

  • During the 2023-24 academic year, 39% of regular attendees at East Hill and 44% of regular attendees at Springbrook met typical growth standards for iReady math, as defined by the Kent School District.
  • 22% of regular attendees at East Hill and 19% of regular attendees at Springbrook met stretch growth standards for iReady Math.

iReady Level Scales:

  • 100% of regular attendees at East Hill and 98% of regular attendees at Springbrook either maintained or increased their iReady Grade Levels.
  • 50% of regular attendees at East Hill and 52% of regular attendees at Springbrook improved their iReady Math levels.
  • 50% of regular attendees at East Hill and 46% of regular attendees at Springbrook maintained their iReady Math levels.

For data on regular attendees meeting typical and stretch math growth standards and improving in iReady math levels, see Table 6 and Table 7.

Classroom Behavior
Cohort 19 established a goal for the program year 2023-24 of measuring improved classroom behavior for regular attendees by 50%. While the goal was specific to regular attendees, this data was not available through the teacher survey, but rather included all youth attending program.

At Springbrook, teachers (n=36) indicated that 92% of students needed to improve on engagement in learning behaviors related to alertness, 86% of students needed to improve on participation in learning activities and staying focused as needing to improve. Finally, 75% of students needed to improve on coming to school.

Springbrook met the classroom behavior goal across all areas: 81% of students demonstrated progress on youth coming to school, 73% improved in alertness and focus, 71% improved on participation in learning activities, and 58% improved on staying focused.[1]  (See Chart 5 and Chart 6)

[1] Teacher survey data were not collected for participants at East Hill.

Social Emotional Learning
Cohort 19 established a goal for the program year 2023-24 of collecting student perspectives and experiences with the after-school programs through a survey administered by OSPI’s statewide Student Motivation Skills & Beliefs survey. The relevant objective was:

  • 50% of regular attendees will indicate positive social emotional experiences.

There were not available data for this objective in the 2023-24 school year.
