Community Context
Kent Learning Together completed its first grant year during the 2023-24 school year. It provided opportunities for high quality programming in response to the needs and assets of the East Hill Elementary School and Springbrook Elementary School communities:
- The program serves a suburban area of King County with large low-income, immigrant, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), and refugee populations.
- Both schools have a larger proportion of low-income students in comparison to the district during the 2023-24 academic school year.
- East Hill and Springbrook Elementary Schools serve a large population of Multilingual Learners and low-income students.
- During the 2023-24 school year, both sites served a larger proportion of Multilingual Language learners compared to the district.
- East Hill served a greater proportion of Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander compared to Kent School District.
- Springbrook served a greater proportion of Asian and Black/African American students compared to Kent School District.
- In 2022-23, the percentage of 4th grade East Hill and Springbrook students meeting standards in English Language Arts (ELA) was significantly below the district. East Hill students’ scores for math were also significantly below the district. (See Table 1)
- East Hill ELA and Math rates were 21.5% and 10.8%, respectively.
- Springbrook ELA and Math rates were 28.3% and 37.7 %, respectively.
