Program Operations, Schedule, Staffing, and Recruitment
Operations and Schedule
During the 2023-24 school year, Mill Creek, Neely-O’Brien, and River Ridge continued to offer programming during the Fall and Spring semesters. Participation in 21st CCLC programming was available to all students interested in participating.
- Afterschool programming at each site ran from Monday through Thursday for 2-3 hours per day over the course of 30-34 weeks.
- Mill Creek, Neely-O’Brien, and River Ridge all had regular, early-release Wednesdays during the academic year, which allowed site coordinators to run the afterschool program earlier in the day.
Staffing
Each of the three schools had a full-time 21st CCLC site coordinator responsible for overseeing staff and programming at their respective sites. Some of these roles are specifically dedicated to the program, while others involve supporting the program alongside their other school-day responsibilities (e.g., school day teachers, administrators). Running the program requires substantial collaboration and coordination, as the site coordinators manage all 21st CCLC responsibilities as a full-time commitment.

This included an administrator (1), school day teachers (5), non-teaching school staff (3), a high school student (1), and parents (4). During the school year, Neely-O’Brien had a total of 11 paid staff. This included an administrator (1), college students (4), community members (5) and other non-teaching staff (1).
- During the summer, River Ridge had a total of 3 paid staff members and 11 volunteers. This included administrators (3), college students (2), community members (1), parents (2) other non-teaching staff and other staff (5). Recruitment
During the second year of the grant, 21st CCLC sites focused on recruiting 1st-5th grade students at the elementary schools and 6th-8th grade students attending the middle school site. Recruitment for participation involved collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and community partners to identify and invite families who were identified as potentially benefiting from the program. School teachers provided 21st CCLC coordinators with a list of students from their classrooms and community partners referred students had referrals from school staff and administrators for academic and special needs, behavioral issues, or attendance concerns. Due to limited staff capacity, a waiting list was also implemented during the first year.
