Success For Each Child & Eliminate the Opportunity Gap by Leading with Racial Equity

Community Context

The 21st CCLC program in Kent completed its second grant year during the 2023-24 school year. It provided opportunities for high quality programming in response to the needs and assets of the Mill Creek, Neely-O’Brien, and River Ridge communities. These include:

  • The program serves a suburban area of King County with large low-income, immigrant, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), and refugee populations.
  • All three schools have a larger proportion of low-income students in comparison to the district during the 2023-24 academic school year.
  • Mill Creek, Neely-O’Brien, and River Ridge served a large population of BIPOC students (specifically Hispanic or Latino/a/x, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and Black/African American students), Multilingual Learners, and low-income students.
    • During the 2023-24 school year, all three sites served a larger proportion of Black/African American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students compared to the district.
    • Neely-O’Brien and Mill Creek served a significantly greater proportion of Latino/a/x students compared to the district.
    • All three sites served a greater proportion of Multilingual Language Learners[1] compared to the district.
  • In 2022-23, the percentage of 4th grade Neely-O’Brien and River Ridge students meeting standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math was significantly below the district (over 20% less). (See Table 1)
    • Neely-O’Brien ELA and Math rates were 22.2% and 19.4%, respectively.
    • River Ridge ELA and Math rates were 16.1% and 9.2%, respectively.
  • In 2022-23, the percentage of 7th grade Mill Creek Students meeting standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math were also significantly below the district (25.0% and 13.5%., respectively). (See Table 1)

[1] Multilingual Learners (MLL) refers to students who are also referred to as English Language Learners (ELL).  This reflects an ongoing shift in terminology for MLL students in Washington State.
